The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 24 - 27, 1978

Friday, November 24, 1978 To Portland

Well it has been all kinds of weather today. I done up my regular work. About noon Betty called and said the roads were all bare and if I wanted to go to Portland. So we did in the rain. Zak stayed home with Walt. We went to Westbrook and got Dorothea. Joy and girls were going but because of Debbie’s accident they did not go. I felt so sorry for Laurie. She had looked forward so much to going. I got all rest of my shopping done. Dorothea and Betty had aching feet because of their high-heeled boots. Kimmy got so tired and that awful cold. Also Carmen was quite tired.

Saturday, November 25, 1978 very cold 15°, windy

Well it was a very nice day. I done a lot of work etc. Then I got rest of my Christmas gifts ready to wrap tomorrow. I washed today. Kim called in PM. In evening Billie and I down to Fern’s. Carmen and Laurie called here in evening. Betty, Walt and kids over to Joy’s. The wind had blown awfully.

Sunday, November 26, 1978 WINDY, 12 above this morning

It is cold tonight and has been all day and very windy. Awful winds. I done my regular work. Wrapped Christmas gifts, got them all done.

A wicked cold morning but it warmed up to about 20°. I done my wash, went to town then down to Betty’s. I helped her to wrap some gifts. Fern down their washing. Billie stopped at the hospital to see Lloyd Trueworthy. Joy had to take Debbie into the hospital to be checked. San Francisco Mayor and a business associate was killed today.
