The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

A lot of bad storms first of this year. Many days of no school. Billie bought David’s truck, it is just like new. Ronald’s family moved to Bath Maine from Plainfield New Jersey. Kimmy has started having her teeth fixed, straightened out at the orthodontist in South Portland. Bill was very poorly first of the year. He lost a lot of blood by leakage but they couldn’t or never did find out where the blood was coming from. He went to a specialist in hospital in Portland. He got better and had a good summer and no more problems.

Dawn sold her home in Sebago, moved out. She moved into Joy’s house until she got home from Bermuda. In June. Then she moved into Betty’s until she got her house built to move into which was late in the season. Dawn’s mother was away while the house was being built. Also they got it (New Hope Farm shelter) built and moved into. It is a nice building. They worked hard on all summer. Betty put all time on it the summer.

Also Dorothea, Betty, Carmen, Kim and Zak went on a trip to Bermuda to visit Joy. They had a very good time. Also Joy and family moved back here from Bermuda into her own home. She says she is never moving away again.

Also Dorothy Marie McKeen Prescott died this past year. A cancer caused her death.

Billie bought, traded and sold cows and calves during the year.

I got a new sofa bed and a swivel chair for Mother’s Day, they are very nice and I am glad of them. Also Billie got Bill a brand-new TV (color) for Father’s Day. Billie also bought himself a new chair. We sold our old living room furniture to Jeff and Paula.

This year Dorothea and David got the house all made over brand-new. It looks very nice. They are proud of it. Betty and Walt got a new field down in the pasture. Bill and Billie helped on it mostly. Lloyd had a hard summer, his condition up and down. Zak to the hospital CMMC in Lewiston. He had a operation. Kim had a couple bad asthma attacks this past year. Betty and Walt had their barn floor cemented over. A big improvement. Carmen had a good year of school. She was in a school play.

I was reluctant done a great and Late this year Lawrence Boynton died suddenly. It was terrible shock. Billie and he were very close friends. They had the same interest in life, cattle. They traveled around together looking at buying cattle. Billie has known Lawrence and been with him for many years.
