The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 24 - 26, 1978 Christmas

Sunday, December 24, 1978

A nice day. I have been so busy all day. Got supper early. We ate and got ready, went to Fern’s for her tree then came up here for our tree. We all had a lot of nice gifts. This year Joy’s family was home for Christmas and enjoyed all the get-togethers. Paula and Jeff came up for Christmas Eve.

This has been quite a day. It has snowed all day. A real bad storm. We had Christmas at the Horton’s. It was very nice, a delicious turkey dinner. They all got very nice gifts and a lot of them. Bill plowed some driveways. We got the dinner and then in late PM we put Zak and Kim’s gifts away then ate a little. Then we went over to Joy and Susan’s and saw what they got for Christmas. Came home, Dorothea stayed for a little while. Bill went to bed. Billie and I took out the tree, cleaned up decorations and all. This was Joy’s first Christmas at home.

A quite nice day. I have been very busy. I did a big wash. I did the refrigerator (defrosted). I picked up the house, took care of the gifts. I washed floors. Zak came up here for the day and will stay all night. We played games, he had a good time, he watched programs with me. Bill has been plowing snow. Carmen and Laurie rode Flicka today. She did a dite of kicking.
