The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

A very nice sunny dayn on the mild side. I have been busy every minute. Cooked, washed, ironed, washed floors, changed all the beds, dusted, took a bath etc. etc. Bill up to Buddy’s most of the day. Billie here and there. In PM he went with Lawrence. Snow settled some today or melted.

 



 

 

 

 

Sunday, December 3, 1978 Buddy got the well done, Bill $242.30 mine $106.30

 

It was cloudy most all day. A dite of sun in the morning early. It began to snow about dark. Then we got some rain, it was bad along the coast or Southern Maine. I done up the regular work. Kimmy came up, we worked on puzzle. Billie in and out all day. Bill up to Buddy’s, they finished the well. The Free Branch Runners event by here today. Fern has 26 inches of water in her well.

 

 

 

Monday, December 4, 1978

 

Well it rained today. I went down to Betty’s, we wrapped rest of her gifts. I came home, did a dite of wrapping.

 

 

 

Tuesday, December 5, 1978

 

A partly cloudy day, some sun. We went to Shaw’s, also to Ames. Came home, got supper, took care of the groceries. Joy, Betty and I went. Susan went with Kathy.
