The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Sunday, January 21, 1979

Well a nice sunny day finally, we are having quite a winter so far. Rather have it now and not during the spring months. Fern said she got a lot of cards again today. She has got a lot of cards and a good sum of money. Tonight when Billie went out to barn to do the chores he fell on the ice and hurt his arm very bad. Betty came up and took him to the hospital for x-rays. They put it in a sling and told him to keep it up.

A very nice day. It was quite mild nice and sunny but awful slippery. I cooked a boiled dinner. Fern up for supper. I was down to Fern’s today. Betty, Joy and I. Bill done some touching up on the plowing. Billie home, his arm is very painful. I did my ironing early this morning, defrosted the refrigerator also.

It has been quite a nice sunny day but got a little cloudy in evening and the bad storm is coming. We went to town this morning because bad weather is expected tomorrow. Billie’s arm is a dite improved, but still can’t do anything with it. Betty brought Zak up after school was some very good school papers. He has improved so much in his work at school. What a big relief. I hope the girls will improve too.
