The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Today Kim called and said her goodbyes. She left at about noon for Boston with a friend Joleen Bell, to stay overnight and at 7:30 AM will go to the airport and leave for the island of Aruba for a weeks vacation. She and Joleen graduated from Lake Region High School together. I went down to Betty’s to see her living room all done. It looks very nice, they papered at last night. Got through about 3 AM. She and Dorothea and Betty Smith was there and helped to settle it.

A rainy day. I done up regular work and Saturday work. Made rolls. It rained very hard in a.m. and heavy winds. David came and had coffee this morning. Billie didn’t do only regular work. He and I both read all the papers and got caught up on that. Betty and Walt gone away. Carmen and Brogan home alone. Kim and Joleen got to their destination tonight. Joleen was a dite nervous, she had never flown before.

  1. Nanny was being kind - a dite nervous was an understatement. 😉
I enjoy the diaries, Kim, your grandmother reminds me of my grandmother. It brings back nice memories of her and their generation.
