The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Sunday, April 2, 1989

 

A beautiful day. I worked at the desk some. Carmen, Kim and Bro came. They got lunch. Carmen came up, got supper. David came down and had coffee. Walt up for breakfast. Coffee. I made a good mac & cheese. Also a lemon meringue pie. Carmen came up, we cleaned the back porch.

 

 

 

Monday, April 3, 1989

 

What a miserable day. It was cloudy all day and rain. I did the washing. Carmen came and cleaned up the house. She went to town and shopped. Kim called a little while and Betty. Kassie was wet all day. I made a easy supper. Billie to Dr. Goldenhar for his appointment.

 

 

 

Tuesday, April 4, 1989

 

I went down to Betty’s this morning while she and Carmen packed Carmen’s things over to get ready to move up to the new house. They got a few loads moved, it is things going up into their attic. I made a meat loaf for supper, stuffed green peppers. And hamburger with gravy for Billie. Betty called this evening out walking. Kim painting at Betty’s.

 

 

 

Wednesday, April 5, 1989

 

Well it was cloudy and rainy when I got up. A very happy surprise, about 10 AM the clouds cleared away and the sun came out bright and blue sky everywhere. I wrote to Esther. Brogan came up through the field. She has such a good time outside over to her Playhouse and all around. Betty and Carmen hauled about four big loads of goods today. Kim down to Betty’s painting again. Zack home sick from work today. Carmen, Betty and Walt took some food over to him today, he still don’t have his car. Billie cleaning up out around the barn today. We had thunder showers this evening. Carmen, Brogan came up.
