The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 14 - 16, 1989 Mother's Day

 

Sunday, May 14, 1989 I had a very nice Mother’s Day

 

Well it is finally a real nice day weatherwise. It sure was good, we opened up back porch and could sit out there. I had a very nice MOTHER’S DAY. Very pretty cards, perfumery etc. and about 8 pounds of chocolates. Very pretty mirror to go over the couch and very pretty throw pillows etc. Very pretty plants to set out in the flower garden. David and Dorothea came also Joy and Cindy came.

 

 

 

Monday, May 15, 1989 Billie turned cows out for first time today to stay all night

 

At last it was a nice sunny day. We had the porch opened up today again, very mild. I done regular work and washed. Jeff came and brought a Mother’s Day gift and a very pretty card. He called at Betty’s also. Billie did regular chores and hauled some bedding down to the cow shed in the pasture. Carmen did rest of her painting, chairs and table. Kim painted porch at Betty’s. Dorothea worked today. David sold his big cow (?) To Wade Kimball today. Billie turned cows out for all night.

 

 


 

Tuesday, May 16, 1989 MOWED LAWNS FOR FIRST TIME

 

A very nice sunny day. I got up and got my work done up, did the ironing and made a white cake and frosted it was a chocolate frosting. Very good. Also I cooked a very good piece of corned beef and cabbage. It was so good. Billie and I down to Betty Smith’s and made her a nice visit. Her house looks very nice. Inside and out. This is been such a nice day, 70° temps. Carmen and Kim went to Norway, done the shopping for me and there’s. Tom, Charlene and Kirk, Kim’s boyfriend, all down there for supper tonight. They met Kim’s boyfriend tonight.
