The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

A beautiful day, on the coolish side. I did my wash. Read magazines and the old diaries. Carmen came and Brogan. Betty came a little later. She and Carmen over to New England Horse Supply. Carmen worked at Walt’s today. Kim called a minute. We don’t see her very much. Carmen painted the flagpole. Billie been busy outside and down to the shed. Tonight we had Italian sandwiches. Billie got sick eating them. Sent a letter to Esther.

Again the clouds have come back. Billie to the doctors at Fryeburg for his toes. Billie was very sick last night. His stomach is better today. He took it easy. A miserable dreary day. Clouds and rain at times. Betty has bad back problems. Carmen has internal problems. Brogan has a bad cold. I’m worried about all of them. In time they will get out of their troubles. I’m looking forward to it. Carmen to her doctor. Betty to her doctor. I was down there all p.m. while they was gone. Brogan sleeping.

Well what do you now when we got up this morning the sun was shining. I made two rhubarb pies. Cooked swiss steak for supper. I did the ironing, not much. Billie is better. He went over and got his Rototiller and on the way home the Rototiller rolled and went through the back window and smashed it. We had a good supper.

Another very miserable miserable miserable day. Cloudy and rain all day and we are promised the same again tomorrow. Carmen to her doctors over to Norway. Her condition is very puzzling. I hope she will get free from this problem. It is good for her to lose the weight, but it shouldn’t be because of sickness. She worked up to the office yesterday and Kim had to work. Carmen took Billie’s truck down and got the window put him. Betty had Brogan all day.
