The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 14 - 17, 1989

Friday, April 14, 1989

 

A mixed weather day. It was better in PM. It cleared some. Betty, Carmen, Brogan and I went over to Harrison. Walt is over there working on one of his lots. In PM Carmen and I went to Norway. She had some errands to do. Billie worked outside cleaning, raking etc. I ironed. Kim worked at Betty’s and finished the painting. It looks very nice. She did a very nice job, dining room ceiling, walls, wood work and floor (varnished). She worked at hospital tonight. The ground is all white again this morning when we got up. It melted by noon. Missed seeing the TV soaps.

 

 

 

Saturday, April 15, 1989

 

A dite of sun. Today I climbed to the third story in the new house. It is so nice. I love it and so does Carmen, Kim and Betty. It is one of the nicest houses in this town. I wish Bill could have seen it. Kim gone to Portland to do some shopping for their trip. She and Joleen Bell. Carmen took Brogan over to Lewiston to see her family and Dennis. Billie working in the garage. David down this morning for coffee.

 

 

 

Sunday, April 16, 1989

 

Well when we got up this morning what did we see? Snow again. UGH. We have such a mess and then it turned to rain. It rained hard all day. Wind blowed too. I done up regular work. Billie worked out in the garage some, but it got too cold. Carmen called. Kim took her out for breakfast. Walt was up for coffee. Zack came and had breakfast. Brogan came home this forenoon from Lewiston. Betty and Walt out this morning over to the lot in Harrison. Carmen and Kim called down there a while. I worked at the desk all forenoon. Read some old diaries.

 

 

 

Monday, April 17, 1989 Susan and Monica

 

At last we got up and the sun was coming up. And it has been a beautiful sunny day all day. Carmen came and she cleaned up the house. Brogan was here, she is a cute little miss. We all enjoy her. I did a wash in a.m. In PM I got ready to go to the airport with Betty. She took Susan and Monica. They are going to Florida for about 10 days. Monica’s school vacation. Betty stopped on the way home. We got Kentucky Fried Chicken and had for supper. It seems so good to have such a nice day after all the rain we had.
