The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 8 - 11, 1989

Thursday, June 8, 1989

Another one of those horrible days. It is so sickening. So sick of the clouds rain and all. I didn’t do too much, it is so mean and nasty day yet there was some clear sky. Not much. Then at 6:30 or so we see some sun which had got through the clouds, a pretty sunset. Carmen to the Dr. at Norway. He took some more tests and wants to see her Tuesday again. She is not too good. Kim went by and tooted her horn. Watched soaps. The garden is up and growing.

Friday, June 9, 1989 Carlton called today

Just another miserable day. I wonder how many more will come this way. I got up early, got the breakfast. I made chocolate chip cookies. They want at all good, overcooked. Carmen and Brogan came, they cleaned the house. They went home to get ready to go to Auburn were Brogan will spend the weekend with her father and her grandparents. She loves to go over there. Carmen is doing better, got to go to the doctors again next week. Betty and friends gone up to camp tonight. Carlton just returned from Paris. He and Phyllis been over there visiting. She gone to Nova Scotia to visit her mother.

Saturday, June 10, 1989 Graduation

Today Cindy Wolff graduated from Lake Region High School. She carried away many honors, awards, prizes etc. Very smart. She will continue on to college. Carmen called in with Brogan tonight on her way home from visiting her father in Lewiston. I made rolls today, did regular Saturday work.

Sunday, June 11, 1989 Sun shone today, lacks one day of being a week without.

Well today the first time for one day lacking a week without any sun. There was a lot of wind and black clouds but not one raindrop. I made a custard, a chocolate cake today. Brogan came up for a little while. Billie got his lawns all done and Jason came and trimmed. Betty got hers mowed also. Carmen a dite loggy. I hope she will be okay.
