The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 22 - 25, 1989

Saturday, April 22, 1989 Cold and Windy

 

A very cold windy day. I done up regular work and my Saturday work. I made bread and baked some beans. David came and had coffee this morning. I done some reading of the papers and magazines. No one called today except David. Walt came and got the bread at suppertime. Billie called at David and Dorothea’s and to see his cattle and the rooms.

 

 

 

Sunday, April 23, 1989  Very Cold

 

It has been a very nice sunny day, except it was very very cold and windy. Walt up for coffee in morning. I didn’t do anything except finish reading all the papers. Betty, Walt and girls and Brogan went to a horse show up to Dixfield today. Billie called at David’s today. He took up the lawn more.

 



 

 

Monday, April 24, 1989 COLD

 

This morning they had Memorial services for the Navy men that died in the explosion on the US Iowa. Pres. and Mrs. Bush was there. 47 men lost their lives. I washed this morning. I got ready to get a roast pork supper. I had pork, onions, shell beans, cranberry sauce etc. Betty, Walt, Carmen and Brogan were here. They enjoyed it very much. They help do everything. Billie worked in the garage today picking over things. Carmen went to town. Kim painting. Betty got her kitchen cupboards about done. Got a card from Susan today.

 

 

 

Tuesday, April 25, 1989

 

Another cold day. I made a pumpkin pie for supper. Carmen came, did the cleaning. Brogan here with her. I watched soaps. Billie too. Billie done odds and end jobs. Too cold to do much. It has been a nice sunny day.
