The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 1 - 3, 1989 Carmen is Hospitalized

 

Thursday, June 1, 1989

 

Cloudy as usual when we got up. Betty and Betty up to camp today working again. Carmen came and cleaned. She been very busy all day as usual. Billie been busy doing outside chores and work. Brogan had her nap here today. Carmen busy downtown. Carmen didn’t care for the friend she met last night. I washed and ironed. House looks very nice and Carmen cleaned.

 

 

 

Friday, June 2, 1989 $423, CARMEN TO SM HOSPITAL NORWAY

 

A quite nice day. I done up my regular work. Kim came and worked on the car cleaning it etc. She didn’t have to work. She got the lunches. Carmen doing office work for Walt. About 2 o’clock Carmen came and got the checks etc. to go to town. She took Brogan with her. She got down to her mother’s and she had a very bad pain attack, it doubled her right up. So Betty called Kim to come to take her over to the doctor. Carmen’s over to Norway. Kim got her over there as soon as she could. They took tests, x-rays and all, couldn’t find anything. Carmen stayed over to the hospital.

 

 

 

Saturday, June 3, 1989

 

Well it is been a very nice sunny and very warm day. I had all the windows open and the back porch. We haven’t had many “ open up days”yet this season. I did up the regular work. Washed floors. Made rolls, baked some red kidney beans. David came down for coffee. Zack called this morning, brought Billie cords back. I talked with Carmen, she had a lot of pain. She is upset about not being able to see Brogan. Joy and Alisa called also Brogan. Brogan was excited about seeing the baby. Also Dorothea came and called. And Billie, Jane and two children came. Also Susan, we had a nice evening. I’m very pleased for Billie. He is doing well for himself. Betty, Walt, Brogan, Kim and Zak all called on Carmen at the hospital today.
