The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 28 - October 1, 1987

Monday, September 28, 1987 MINCEMEAT

 

Another very nice sunny day. It was beautiful, very warm in PM. Well I did the washing. Carmen came, she and Brogan, she cleaned up the house and she helped to do the mincemeat. Also Kim came and she helped get the apples and tomatoes ready. Also she brought a very good beef soup for lunch. They all liked it very much. It was very good. Carmen did the shopping. Bill in more or less pain. Betty brought him some pills for the diarrhea.

 

 

 

Tuesday, September 29, 1987

 

A very nice sunny day and very mild. I did the last batch of mincemeat. We watched the TV soaps. The lumber came today for Betty’s fence. Billie got more of his fall work done today. Also he and Bill got their hair cut.

 

 

 

Wednesday, September 30, 1987 Rained hard in PM

 

Got up, got my work done. I did the ironing. Got ready, we Betty H, Betty S, Carmen, Brogan and I all went up to North Conway to do the October 17 birthday shopping for Brogan Alyssa Horton Willette. One-year-old party. Also we all did some other shopping. I got Billie’s blanket and spread for Billie’s bed. It rained hard most of the day. Zack home sick today from school. Billie to Dr. Doyle for his checkup. He told him to keep a close watch on his foot.

 

 

 

Thursday, October 1, 1987

 

It was a nice day. I was busy all day. I made a pie. Cooked turkey for supper. Carmen and Brogan here for supper. We had a good supper, turkey, squash, onions and Boston cream pie. Carmen and Betty worked and cleaned out there deep-freeze etc. Zack brought home a very good test paper, 90 in geometry.
