The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 28 - 30, 1987 Poppa's 79th Birthday

Monday, December 28, 1987

A nice quiet sunny day. Some breeze. I did the washing. Did the ironing. Carmen and Brogan came. Brogan still has a cold. Carmen cold and asthma, they feel miserable. The baby was cute even though. She cleaned up the house and it looks so nice after she gets done. Milan is about the same, some pain and tired. Bill is the same also they haven’t discovered what the bunch is yet. He is comfortable. Betty’s cold is still going strong.

Well we got snow last night and is snowing some today. Not heavy. Got the regular work done, made a pudding and some chocolate fudge. I worked at the desk some. Billie sweeping the snow off steps and driveway. Betty to the doctors today to get a shot for her cold. It is bad. Milan is better and is out of intensive care.

Wednesday, December 30, 1987 Bill 79 today at Mercy Hospital

This is been a very cold and windy day. I done up the work, got ready and went to Portland to the Mercy Hospital for Bill’s 79th birthday. Dorothea, Billie, Betty Smith, Kim, Brogan, Carmen and me. Brogan did him more good than all the medicine and doctors ever was. He was glad all came to see him. It was such a cold day. David came down here and stayed with Kassie and the house while we were gone. That was kind of him.
