The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 5 - 8, 1987

Thursday, November 5, 1987

 

A partly cloudy and sunny day. I got real cold. I done up the work, went down to babysit while they worked down to the barn. They got it ready and got the horses in for first time tonight. Billie and Zack got a load of bedding after school. Watched most of the programs at Betty’s. Brogan has a cold. Zack and Billie down to see Milan tonight. He is much better.

 

 

 

Friday, November 6, 1987 VERY COLD, FIRST SNOW

 

When we got up this morning snow was all over the ground. I done up the work, washed etc. Went over to Denmark with Betty, Carmen, Kim, Brogan. Didn’t find any trees. Came home, got lunch. Got supper prepared. Watched soaps. It is a very cold day. Snow didn’t melt.

 

 

 

Saturday, November 7, 1987 MILAN CAME HOME

 

A nice sunny day. I did regular work. Washed floors, baked the beans. David came and had coffee. Milan called, he could come home. So Billie went and got him. Also went and got their mail. It was kind of late when he got home. David was here again to help Billie go and get the hay Billie bought from Gordon Weeks. Zack came up after he got his work done. Betty and Charlene out looking for Christmas gifts today. Carmen brought Brogan over to Betty’s today. Betty kept her all night. She still has a cold.

 

 

 

Sunday, November 8, 1987 Bill Walker and nephew called at Betty’s

 

Clear when we got up but it got cloudy. Walt up for coffee and donuts. In PM went down to Betty’s to visit with Bill and the cousin. Dorothea, Joy, Debra and family, Carmen, Brogan, Kim and me. Enjoyed the afternoon very much.
