The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Another one of those very pretty fall days. Clear and cool. I did a wash. Billie to the Dr. in Fryeburg (Dr. Golderhar) for his feet. I made a very good meat pie for supper. Kim called tonight about suppertime. She had a dish a meat pie and a piece of squash pie. Bill been reading all day. He didn’t have much pain today. Carmen called this p.m. She brought my groceries. She has been busy all day getting ready for October 17. Brogan Alyssa Horton Willette one-year-old party. Today Zack got his license back today after it had has been suspended for one month. Nancy Reagan going to hospital for heart examination tomorrow. Been looking for the girl in the well, only 18 months. US oil tankers fired on.

Saturday, October 17, 1987 This Has Been A Red LETTER DAY

It was BROGAN ALYSSA HORTON WILLETTE’S first birthday. We all went to Carmen and Dennis’s house. They had a delicious snack and ice cream and cake. The cake made by Brogan’s aunt. It was just the same as Kim’s aunt used to make for her. The miss got a lot of nice pretty clothes, boots slippers, gifts, rocking horse, punching bag etc. etc. and a nice lot of money. She was very cute and kept everyone laughing and got pooped. Had a good rest. The guests were mother and father, grandmother and grandfather, Uncle Zack, Aunt Kim, great Aunt Dorothea, third cousin Joy, two great Aunt Betty, two great Uncle Milan, friends, Tom and Charlene and her pet dog Elsa and her great grandmother and great-grandfather.
