The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 21 - 24, 1987

 

Saturday, November 21, 1987

 

A very nice day. I done the morning work. Washed the floors. Cleaned up, made some brownies, baked some very good beans. Also made good biscuits to go with them. Eddie down to see Kim this weekend. Bill in bed all day. David came down this morning, had coffee. Zack to the Dr., he don’t feel very good. His stomach isn’t very good. Betty and Walt out shopping this PM. Zack cared for Brogan while they were gone. Billie down with Brogan well Zack did the chores. A very cold night.

 

 

 

Sunday, November 22, 1987

 

A very nice sunny day, on the cold side. Some wind. I got up about 6:45. Got breakfast. Carmen came at seven. She worked all night. She was very tired. She ate breakfast then went down and got Brogan and went home to go to bed. She got good pay working overtime besides won’t have to go back to work again tomorrow. Barry came and finished the gates today. Zack helped him. Zack up for breakfast this morning. Also Walt up and had coffee. The new fence looks very nice at Betty’s.

 

 

 

Monday, November 23, 1987

 

A quite nice day. I did a wash, made a coconut pudding for supper, a meat loaf. Carmen and Betty to town. They did my shopping. Billie over to Norway, he got groceries and took my slippers over to be repaired. I watched soaps. Plumber Williams came and did some odd jobs. Milan called today.

 

 

 

Tuesday, November 24, 1987

 

Well, I been busy all day. A quite nice day. I made a loaf of dark bread, a Jell-O salad and pie. I did some washing.
