The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 22 - 24, 1987 Christmas Eve

Tuesday, December 22, 1987

A nice sunny day. I got up, done my work and did my washing. Then Betty came and I went down to Betty’s. Milan, Betty, me and then Carmen, Kim and Brogan came. We made cornballs, pumpkin bread and chocolate fudge. I came home, watched my shows. David was here. Carmen did the shopping. I feel so sorry for her at this time. She is such a good girl, kind and thoughtful girl. I hope she will have a happy time during this holiday besides her girl.

Wednesday, December 23, 1987

I been busy all day. I made a lemon sponge pie, made a cake and frosted three cakes. I made two loaves of bread. I went down and babysat Brogan. Betty had to go away for a couple hours. Carmen worked from 7 AM to 3 PM. Kim came down to Betty’s and changed Brogan and put her to bed. Dorothea called at Betty’s today. She brought a card in for Betty to see. Bill is bad today. His stomach is big as a washtub. Carmen is having the Willette family for Christmas tonight.

Thursday, December 24, 1987 BILL TO HOSPITAL

This morning Bill not any better so he decided to go to the hospital. He is a sight to be seen. His stomach is as big around as a barrel. He was having pain. Milan came and he had a pair of pants that he could get around him so he got ready and Milan took them down. They decided to send him right in to Portland. His condition is serious. Dr. Poliner was the one taking Winchenbach’s place. Well this has been a very busy day for everyone trying to prepare and get ready for tomorrow. In evening we all went to Betty and Milan’s for the Christmas Eve. They had a lot of nice gifts. They came up here and got a lot of nice cards, expensive things, and money. Betty Smith and us had a nice lunch. Which they all enjoyed very much.
