The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 9 - 12, 1987

 



Friday, October 9, 1987

 

A very nice sunny day. Not too cold. I cleaned the cupboards, the stove, washed clothes, cleaned refrigerator. I went over to Carmen’s this afternoon with Betty. Brogan was asleep. Came home, watched TV then got supper. Bill got a call from the doctors office (Marcia’s). He has gallstones. Billie been busy all day. David came and they fixed the waterpipe in the barn etc. He has helped him twice this week. Dorothea called this morning. Betty, Kim and Carmen had sandwiches here at noon. Milan about the same.

 

 

 

Saturday, October 10, 1987

 

A very nice day. I done regular work, washed the floors. Didn’t do much, read the papers. Milan didn’t come home today. Zack up a couple times today. Carmen had to work from 3 to 11:30. Also Kim. The Horton family all had their pictures taken today as a free gift which Betty won. Betty and Walt had the baby.

 

 

 

Sunday, October 11, 1987

 

A cloudy rainy day. Walt up for coffee this morning. I did regular work, made a mac & cheese. Also my week supply of cocoa. I worked at the desk.

 

 

 

Monday, October 12, 1987 Columbus Day

 

A holiday mostly. A very nice sunny day. I did a big wash. Carmen came and cleaned. Betty and Zack up to New Hampshire. Kim had to go to work today. Milan came home today from the hospital. Carmen went and got him. He is very thin. Lost weight. Carmen and family over to Lewiston this PM and at his folks for supper and evening. Billie took up the flowers today.
