The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 23 - 26, 1987

 

Saturday, May 23, 1987

 

I been busy, done up the regular work. Made a cake. Washed floors. Dusted. Did odds and end jobs. Bill read all day. Kim and Eddie came late this afternoon about 5 PM. They brought of load of things down.

 

 

 

Sunday, May 24, 1987 cloudy all day, some rain

 

A miserable day. I got up about 7 AM, got the breakfast. Walt came and had coffee. I done up the work. Kim and Eddie called. They went out for brunch or breakfast. Betty, Kim and I went to get flowers and plants for the Cemetery and Kim’s new home. I didn’t do much. Eddie cleaned Kim’s car, changed the oil etc. They had supper at Betty’s. I did a ironing today. We got a good rain last night. Bill reading.

 

 

 

Monday, May 25, 1987 Planted, Cloudy

 

I didn’t get up till late because it is a holiday. Got breakfast, done up the dishes. Kim came up, had breakfast. Milan came. I made beds after they went. Bill reading. Kim and Zack up to the shelter. Raking, cleaning up etc. Billie harrowed the garden. Did some planting.

 

 

 

Tuesday, May 26, 1987 Kim

 

Billie got the rest of the planting done. They came to Betty’s and done the barn roof on the back side. Carmen and Dennis came over and planted the garden at Betty’s. They stayed at Betty’s for supper. A beautiful day. Betty cleaned her den. Brogan don’t feel very good today because of her teeth. Today Kim filled out papers and had a interview at the hospital for a job. She left here to go home about 7:30 AM. Got home or to work at 10:30.
