The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 27 - 30, 1987

Saturday, June 27, 1987 RAIN RAIN

 

A miserable rainy day. I didn’t wash floors. I done up regular work, worked at the desk. Milan called this a.m. Carmen and Dennis are moving. Betty and Bill over in PM. Also Zack. They helped a lot. Zack went to work on a new job for Bill Centamore in Sweden.

 

 

 

Sunday, June 28, 1987

 

A nice day after it cleared off in a.m. Bill over to Carmen’s in a.m. At about 12:30 -1 o’clock Bill and Betty went over. They packed, did a lot of cleaning up. Then in early PM Zack and Walt went over with their truck and all hands moved, lifted and tugged. They got them all moved at about 6:30. What a relief. Billie mowed lawns and picked strawberries. Done his regular work. Kim up for breakfast. Her last day to work days. I cleaned up the whole house, washed floors, dusted. I went over to Carmen’s in late PM. The baby is so good.

 

 

 

Monday, June 29, 1987

 

A kind of cloudy early a.m. but soon cleared and it got very hot. I changed beds. Did a big washing. Milan, Betty called. Betty and Kim called. They didn’t come to do the clap boarding at Kim’s. They finally got the water turned on at Carmen and Dennis’s. Bill over there today. They’ve gone away for the day. Betty and Bill went to Westbrook today to get the new sink for Kim’s house. Kim started work today till 11 PM. Zack mowed lawns all day. Billie went to the doctors (Goldenhar) and favored his bad foot.

 

 

 

Tuesday, June 30, 1987 VERY HOT

 

A nice day. It was hot. I done regular work. I did a big ironing. Billie up to David’s. We had more strawberries and baked chicken breasts. They were delicious. We had a very good (blank). Milan called and his friend. Carmen had to work tonight. Heavy thundershowers in PM.
