The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 9 - 12, 1987

 

Sunday, August 9, 1987

 

Didn’t do much, it was partly cloudy and sunny. Billie took Esther and I up to Dorothea’s then over to Carmen’s. Brogan was very cute as usual. Dorothea and family glad we called. Esther made a very good soup for lunch. It was quite hot at times.

 


 

 

Monday, August 10, 1987

 

Cloudy. We did the washing and ironing. Got the supper. Didn’t do much but Carmen came, she did the cleaning and went to town. Esther went with her.

 

 

 

Tuesday, August 11, 1987

 

A nice day, on the cool side. I nice breeze. I got up early, got my work done. Esther done a lot. They cleaned the septics at the shelter and at Susan’s. I went down to Betty’s. Betty Smith was there. We got broccoli and cauliflower ready for freezing. Carmen and Dennis picked the vegetables. Kim was up to her house painting. She came down. Also Esther’s friend came from New Hampshire. She came down to Betty’s to meet us. Then they went out for a ride and for lunch with Esther. Esther over to Susan’s when they cleaned the septic. Bill read all day, he came down to Betty’s to see Brogan. Also Debbie and her three children called, the baby is cunning. Carmen and Kim had to work tonight. Kassie got awful tired today down to Betty’s.

 


 

 

 

 

Wednesday, August 12, 1987

 

Billie and Betty and Milan over and got some blueberries. We got some of them picked over. I cooked corned beef for supper and we had Swiss chard greens with it. It was very good. Bill reading all day again. Saw Brogan a little while today.
