The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 30 - September 2, 1987 Esther Left


Sunday, August 30, 1987 a very nice turkey dinner

 

A very nice day. Sunny and mild. We got up early. Esther got the turkey to going, had the breakfast. Got cleaned up from that. Walt came up, Kim called. We prepared for the dinner up to camp. After the turkey got done, we got it out of the oven, got it cut up. Betty came and got us. Milan, Betty S and Verna, Kim and dogs were up there. Betty H, Walt, Zack, Kim, Carmen, Dennis, Brogan, Billie, Esther, Joy, Dorothea, David, Fern, later Jay, Debbie, Jessica, Danica and Leeanna came, not for dinner, and I. Then Susan came later. Everyone had a good time.

 

 

 

Monday, August 31, 1987

 

A nice sunny day. We washed. Esther over to Susan’s. She got rest of her things picked over. Carmen called to say goodbye to Esther. Bill has a cold. Billie been busy all day. Kim up to Massachusetts.

 

 

 

Tuesday, September 1, 1987 ESTHER LEFT

 

Nice day. We was up early this morning. Got breakfast etc. and Esther left at 6:45 to go to the airport. Susan came and got her. I did up the work after she left and did the ironing. Went down to Betty’s. Carmen, Dennis and Brogan were there. Kim returned home from Massachusetts this PM. Miss Esther being around. She was very helpful. Did a lot, got meals and helped to clean up.

 

 

 

Wednesday, September 2, 1987

 

A nice day, cool. It got a little cloudy but no rain. I made two pies. Got ready, went over to the shopping center in Oxford with Betty H, Carmen, Kim and Betty Smith. Kids did some clothes shopping. I got supper. Zack here and helped Bill to fix his car. Dorothea called at Betty’s to see Carmen’s clothes. Horse was better today. Got a birthday present for Zack.
