The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 13 - 16, 1987

Monday, July 13, 1987

 

Another of those foggy days and Col. North’s testimony. I cooked a chicken dinner. Carmen shelled the peas. I made a chocolate pudding. Betty and I went to see Cindy Morrison about refrigerator. Then we came up through Naples. Dennis and Brogan came today. Then they went to Lewiston to visit his parents. Betty S and Betty H up to camp and did some cleaning up and got cooled off in the Lake. Billie was up there too. Zack didn’t have to work. Worked at home.

 

 

 

Tuesday, July 14, 1987

 

Hazy, foggy and hot and humid. I done up the regular work. Betty, Carmen, Dennis, Kim and Brogan here for dinner and Zack. I did my ironing, went down to Betty’s for a little while. Betty and Carmen worked on the horses. Kim to work. We had hot chicken sandwiches for supper and ice cream. I hope we get some good weather soon.

 

 

 

Wednesday, July 15, 1987 MAMAS 107 BIRTHDAY, MOWED HAY, ZACK HAS A NEW JOB, AT LAST A NICE CLEAR SUNNY DAY NO HUMIDITY. ZACK GOT HIS CAR LICENSE

 

At last we had a very nice clear and sunny day and no humidity. Billie got the hay all mowed. It took six hours. I didn’t do too much today. I made a Swiss steak for supper. Watched them mow the hay down. The Contra hearings on all day. Bill watched them. Zack got his car license and worked at his new job today.

 

 

 

Thursday, July 16, 1987 Great Grammy Briggs died last night, they got a call this morning

 

Another very nice sunny day, good hay weather. Gordon raked and baled. I made chicken pie. Billie got some more raspberries. Carmen and Dennis stayed up to camp last night. Brogan stayed all night with Betty. Gordon worked on the hay all day. Zack on his new job again today. I hope you will be able to work all summer. Had our first mess of string beans. Kassie is two years old today. Got the hay all in tonight except for a few heavy bundles which were a dite damp.
