The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 2 - 5, 1987

Sunday, August 2, 1987 Kim and Eddie on a trip to Vermont

 

Another one of those very nice sunny days. I felt better today. Got up, got my work done. I looked over the rest of the snapshots. Carmen called, Dennis and Brogan, also Betty call. Carmen made out some dinner ideas. Dennis worked in the garden. Zack’s truck gear went today, he will take it to the garage tomorrow. Nothing serious. Kim got back about 5:30, they had a good time and enjoyed it. She remembered everybody with gifts. She was very tired.

 

 

 

Monday, August 3, 1987 RAIN

 

Well we got a much-needed rain today. It rained hard last night and all forenoon today. Billie over to Dr. Goldenhar’s with Milan this morning. I made a rhubarb pie, got the bills off today. Betty Smith called at Sadie’s while they were at the doctor. Zack got his truck over to the garage today.

 

 

 

Tuesday, August 4, 1987 HAIR SET

 

A very nice day but awful hot. I took a bath, went down and got my hair set. Carmen came and did the cleaning. I didn’t do much today. We watched the soaps this PM. Tom and Charlene called this PM. Carmen, Dennis and Brogan up swimming. Kim and Betty called this p.m. Zack got his car back today.

 

 

 

Wednesday, August 5, 1987 ESTHER CAME

 

A beautiful day, cooler. I been puttering around all day or morning. We watched the programs. Esther and Susan came at about 3:30 PM. Fern and Dorothea came in PM. Also Betty. We was glad to see them. Es looked real good. Carmen and Brogan came about 9 o’clock. Vince and Susan and Vince called also Susan and Vince here in evening. Esther seemed pleased to be back home seeing everyone. Kim had to work. Milan and Betty on a trip up to Rangeley, coming home tomorrow. Carmen and Betty washed porch windows. Carmen and family over to Lewiston. Carmen got her hair cut.
