The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 3 - 6, 1987

Wednesday, June 3, 1987 CALF BORN

I done regular work. I worked at the desk, made out the bills. Got them mailed. Checks came today. Billie mowed lawns. I watched TV shows, made two rhubarb pies. I made a meat loaf. The steel beams came for the new house today. Today Betty finished last of her cleaning. Dorothea is cleaning her house too. She got Fern’s room done. Today David’s cow had her calf. It was a breech birth. David and Dr. had to help her. Poor cow.

Thursday, June 4, 1987 RAIN

It has been a very rainy day, just miserable all day. I done up the work. Washed, defrosted the refrigerator. Carmen came and cleaned up the house. Betty came, Brogan is so cute now. Smarter than chain lightning. Betty H, Betty S, Brogan and Carmen all went to Norway, done some shopping. They didn’t do anything over to Carmen’s house lot today. Carmen’s shift was from 4:30 PM to 8:30 PM. Zack up a few minutes before supper.

Friday, June 5, 1987 GOOD NEWS

It was cloudy in a.m. but it cleared and in PM it was sunny and hot. Betty down and got a perm today. I put a rinse on my hair. Carmen came and brought Brogan. I had her till Betty came. She is such a good child, beautiful. Billie and Dorothea to Portland to get some things. Billie got a new razor. Carmen, Dennis and Brogan to Lewiston to get her car fixed. Dennis had to work tonight, Carmen didn’t. Kim got a call today at work, she is hired to do the job at NCM hospital. We are all very pleased and she too. I wish her the best of luck. She is a smart girl.
