The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Thursday, August 13, 1987

 

A very nice day, sunny, clear. Esther to Norway with Susan and Monica. Billie doing things outside. I did the washing, made a blueberry pie, got a few things started for supper. Barry up to Kim’s tonight. He didn’t do too much. They started to lay the rug’s. Kim’s patience is running out waiting. Betty out and in. Brogan called and made a call. Carmen and Betty to town. Kim and Betty S over to the cottage and cleaned it. Bill sits and reads all day. Horse’s foot is coming good.

 


 

 

Friday, August 14, 1987

 

Kind of foggy and hazy in a.m. or early a.m. then it cleared and was sunny rest of the day. I didn’t do much. Billie to Portland with Dorothea to see about getting shoes. Esther to Norway with Milan then over to Susan’s in PM. They went to town. Eddie came today to help Kim do some things to get her bedroom settled. They went up to camp to swim and Betty H, Betty S and Joy W all up to camp and Dorothea later in evening. Verna called this evening.

 

 

 

Saturday, August 15, 1987 RED HOT

 

This is been a very hot and muggy day. We didn’t do too much today. Esther over to Susan’s to pick over her photos etc. up in Susan shed chamber. She had supper over there too. I made some rolls today. I washed floors. Carmen had to work today. Billie been busy all day. They stayed at camp tonight.

 

 

 

Sunday, August 16, 1987 HOT HOT HOT

 

Kim and Eddie called this morning. Esther and I looked over pictures. Walt up for breakfast. Kim and Carmen down to breakfast at Betty and Walt’s. We went up to camp today. It was hot. Bill didn’t go.
