The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 3 - 6, 1987

Thursday, September 3, 1987 checks $402, $174 = $576 ROAD

 

A nice day. Still cold. I got ready, Carmen, Brogan and I over to the eye doctor, Dr. Farmer, to have my glasses checked etc. Brogan is the cutest kid I ever see. Billie busy all day. Bill just the same. Had Zack up, we had a steak supper. He is all tired out. They began on the road today. It will be a nice new black top.

 

 

 

Friday, September 4, 1987 a nice day

 

Zack all done work tonight for his summer job. I did a washing. They are still working on the road. Billie busy all day. Bill read all day. Carmen didn’t come over, she works tonight. Zack out and got some new things for school.

 

 

 

Saturday, September 5, 1987

 

A nice day. Betty and Walt on a trip up north for a night or two. Carmen came over to Betty’s to mow but the mowing machine didn’t work so she didn’t get it all done. Zack did some trimming. He and Carmen went shopping for Zack’s school clothes. Betty and Walt left about 12:30. Milan up today. I went down to Betty’s to stay with Brogan in PM. Zack got a lot for his shopping. Brogan got some new things too.

 



 

 

Sunday, September 6, 1987

 

Mostly cloudy. I defrosted refrigerator on breezeway. I made up cocoa. Shampooed my hair. Carmen and Zack working at Betty’s.
