The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 19 - 22, 1987

 

Friday, June 19, 1987 Red-Hot all day. SCHOOL ALL DONE. Eddie came tonight.

 

It has been a very hot day. I stripped the beds and washed. Carmen came and cleaned the house, changed the beds. Betty, Zack and I over to Norway, we ordered the new SELF DEFROSTING REFRIGERATOR. Carmen got Bill and Billie’s lunch. Betty and Zack ate after they got home. Brogan is very cute. All her new tactics. Carmen and Kim to Portland and done some shopping. Eddie came tonight to visit with Kim. Betty H and Joy up there. Eddie and Zack up to put the docks out. Zack’s last day of school, end of exams. Susan called tonight, she is upset about her kids.

 

 


 

Saturday, June 20, 1987

 

A very nice sunny day, a breeze so wasn’t as hot. I done my work. Baked some beans, washed floors, ironed, other odd jobs. Carmen came, she went down to Betty’s to see them working on the horses and they put them all in together in the front pasture. Betty S and her friend Norma called. They had been having a good time, walking, riding and swimming. They ate out. Carmen working tonight. Haven’t seen hide nor hair of Kim and Eddie. They were up to camp today. Billie and Zack mowed their lawns. Dorothea called today. David went to the Dr., he told him he has shingles.

 

 

 

Sunday, June 21, 1987

 

A nice day. It was Father’s Day. Bill got a nice card and money. Also a brand-new mailbox. Walt was pleased with all of his gifts. We went up to camp. It was nice. Zack was with us today. Had a steak cookout, salad, nice bread and a strawberry shortcake. Carmen had to go to work.

 

 

 

Monday, June 22, 1987 BROGAN A NEW TOOTH, A NEW GE REFRIGERATOR AND DEEP-FREEZE AT CARMEN’S.

 

Cloudy all day and rain at night. Today they delivered a brand-new GE refrigerator from Western Auto at Norway. Also add brand-new deep-freeze at Carmen’s. Today I did the washing. Kim came up for breakfast. Also for supper. We had strawberries and cream, ham, asparagus, hot rolls, mashed potatoes and chocolate pie and whipped cream. They came at about 10:30 AM with the refrigerator. Betty was here. She helped me to change them and the contents around. Bill and Zack down and worked on the well. Bill, Betty and I over to Carmen’s. Brogan was so cute. She has a new tooth. Barry R came and fixed the cupboards over refrigerator so it will fit in there. He done a good job. Billie’s foot bad tonight.
