The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Bill still watching those hearings on TV. I been busy. I made two pies (rhubarb), a cake. Billie busy all day. We watched TV soaps this PM. Good to see them again. Carmen worked at Betty’s again. Then in PM Dennis and brother came. They got rest of the hay in. It was very hot. Nice drying though.

 

 

 

Saturday, July 18, 1987

 

A very hot sunny day. I made a cake, washed the floors. Baked some good white pea beans. Had home baked bread. We had Brogan for a while in the PM. Carmen and she made a visit in a.m. Betty and all of them had supper up to camp. They all went swimming today. They had a good time all weekend up there. They came home late tonight during the shower we had, a very bad one this shower late tonight. Dorothea and Joy down to Betty’s in eve after they came home from camp. I watched three episodes of Days of Our Lives this PM. They had been cut off during the week because of the Contra hearings in Washington. Billie mowed lawns and trimmed.

 

 

 

Sunday, July 19, 1987

 

A nice sunny day. I didn’t get up till 7 AM. I took a bath. The electricity was back on after the bad shower last night. Walt up for coffee. I done up the regular work. Kim and Eddie came, they had breakfast. Kim, Zack, Carmen and Brogan went to the grave site service for Thelma Briggs, Great Grammy Briggs and Great Great Grammy Briggs to Brogan. Billie and I called at Milan and Betty’s. We took down a gift for Milan and a cake for them for bringing us water. I watched the shows Days of Our Lives. Zack got stopped for speeding this afternoon. His license was suspended for a while. I felt sorry for him, he was so upset. He got a talk from his ma and pa. Zack was very depressed and nervous.
