The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Sunday, July 5, 1987

 

The sun was shining this morning when we got up. It has been nice all day with winds. A good drying day. Carmen and Dennis came over, picked a few strawberries. Then Billie mowed them up. I did my hair, been busy all day. I did the bills, wrote to Esther, got Jeff’s card ready to go. Bill up to Kim’s all day with Barry. Barry did a lot up there today. Billie mowed lawns and trimmed also mowed the pasture over. Carmen did some washing here today.

 

 

 

Monday, July 6, 1987

 

A nice sunny day, a quite nice breeze. I did the washing. Carmen washed some things also. The house looks nice and clean tonight. Carmen got me some things at the store today. Billie over to Oxford to Carter’s vegetable stand. Got strawberries and peas. We had peas for supper. Bill up to Kim’s today where they are working. Kim worked today. Carmen worked the night shift at the hospital. Zack to school for English.

 

 

 

Tuesday, July 7, 1987

 

A quite nice day, on the warm side. I did the work. Kim up for breakfast. Bill down town. Billie worked in the garden. Bill down to the spring all the morning. In PM and after supper up to Kim’s. Carmen worked at Betty’s. Dennis worked in the garden. Zack helped. Milan and Betty called little while. Dorothea down to Jeff’s today for his birthday. Carmen and Brogan came up today to get Billie’s truck. I did my ironing today.

 

 

 

Wednesday, July 8, 1987

 

Partly cloudy and sunny day in PM. Real hot and humid with showers forming. We didn’t get any, it was sunny in p.m. Billie mowed some of the pasture. Zack hauled some gravel down to the spring for Bill. Milan called. Carmen worked at Betty’s again today. Zack and Carmen got a lot done in the upper barn all day. Worked at the lower barn today. Bill up to Kim’s today while the plumber was there. Barry didn’t come tonight. I didn’t do much today. No soaps because it was Col. North’s testimony.
