The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Sept 7 - 9, 1987

 

Monday, September 7, 1987 Labor Day

 

Labor Day, no school. I did the washing and ironing. Carmen came and cleaned up the house. It looks very nice when she gets it all done. Brogan didn’t come, she was over to Lewiston with her father for the day. Her grandmother took care of her.

 

 


 

Tuesday, September 8, 1987 ZACK’S LAST YEAR OF SCHOOL, SCHOOL BEGAN

 

This is Zack’s last year of school. I’ll be glad for him when it is over. I went down for the picture taking. I’m glad I lived to see him began his last year. Hope we all live for his graduation. Well today got things together to make pickles. Carmen and Brogan here for supper. A (burn?) supper, hamburger, squash pie, muffins, nothing very tasty.

 

 

 

Wednesday, September 9, 1987 RAIN CAME

 

It has finally rained. It rained last night and most of the day. We needed it so bad. Well Carmen came. I went down to Betty’s today. Brogan is so cute. Smarter is a whip. Carmen and I came up here, we got the pickles ready. I had them cooking and got them into the jars. Jeff and Dorothea gone to Massachusetts to visit with Sandy. Dennis’s sister. It turned out to be a good day. Carmen went to town and got the ingredients for mustard pickles. We got them ready to set overnight.
