The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 23 - 26, 1987

Tuesday, June 23, 1987

 

Cloudy most all day, got some sun in late PM. No one at Carmen’s except the telephone company hooked up her phone. Didn’t do much today. Betty and Kim over to Norway shopping for Kim’s house is PM. Carmen, Dennis and Brogan called in evening. She helped picked berries. Dennis worked in his garden. Brogan is a cute baby, very entertaining.

 

 

 

Wednesday, June 24, 1987

 

Cloudy and foggy in early a.m. It cleared away about 9 AM and it came off hot. I done regular work. Milan came up. Zack hauling stuff to the dump from Kim house. At last they are working over to Carmen and Dennis’s today. Carmen got home at about 7:30. Bill over to Carmen’s today and Betty.

 

 

 

Thursday, June 25, 1987

 

A cloudy day all day. I done work, washed, made a pie. I had Brogan here for a little while. Carmen and Kim went to Portland. Betty came and got Brogan. She took her to her house. I stayed there while she was gone. Then I came home and Thena came over for a little while. She isn’t very well. She has been very sick and in hospital while in Florida. She is waiting to find someone to go down to her house on the lake with her. She isn’t able to stay alone. Bill over to Carmen’s all day. Also the people came and worked over there.

 

 

 

Friday, June 26, 1987 CLOUDY AND RAIN

 

A miserable day. Carmen has to move. Cloudy, dreary and rain. I done up regular work and breakfast. Kim here for breakfast. Milan called. Got ready, went over to Carmen’s. They moved. Milan help move some things. Zack had Walt’s truck. Betty, Zack, Carmen and Betty did the loading and unloading. What a mess it was. Wet muddy outside. They tracked in awfully. I stayed at the house of Brogan. She was good, got tired. They got all but the kitchen things. That all has got to be washed. Betty, Zack and Carmen set beds up, made beds etc. Brogan had her first nap. They all stayed there all night. Dennis had to work all day at his job. Zack stayed over to Carmen’s late to help her.
