The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 27 - 30, 1987

 

Wednesday, May 27, 1987

 

It has been cloudy all day. Some sun and breaks in the clouds. I done up the work. They finished the roof at Walt’s. Carmen came and they, she and Betty, cleaned her living room and bathroom. Billie been busy all day, got milk over to Norway and got the seed for rest of the garden (Millett). Milan called. Bill to town. I sent a letter to Betty, she is back in the hospital.

 

 

 

Thursday, May 28, 1987 SHOWER, HOT

 

Tonight we had the first real thunder shower. I been busy all day. Done some cleaning etc. It cleared about noon. It came off very hot. Betty and Carmen cleaned Betty’s dining room.

Friday, May 29, 1987 NEW COW, NEW CALF David’s

 

Cloudy when we got up, the sun came out off and on till PM then it was mostly sunny. Milan, Betty and I went to the cemeteries this forenoon. Carmen came and got some things for the yard sale tomorrow. Bill up to Dorothea’s to get a table for Carmen’s sale. I didn’t do very much today. Billie mowed all the lawns. Today they bought another Hereford heifer.

 

 

 

Saturday, May 30, 1987 SALE KIM CAME

 

Carmen had a yard sale at Milan’s today. Did well. Kim came at about 10. Carmen called for breakfast. She has a busy day ahead. I done up my work and went down to Milan’s, it was very hot but we all sat under the shade tree. It was very nice and cool. A lot of people was there. She made a lot of money. They came today and filled in around Carmen’s house. Kim had supper with us then she left and went home at about 6 PM. Got home at 9 PM.
