The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 24 - 27, 1987 Billie to Hospital

 

Friday, July 24, 1987

 

What a horrible hot day, muggy and sticky. Done up the work then I went up to camp with Betty, Milan, Betty, Kim and me. Later on Joy came. Also Helen Fleck and Maxine Staley and granddaughter came up. Carmen worked at Betty’s, also made a casserole for the suppers and greens. I got home at about 4 PM. Bill watched TV all day. Billie is having trouble with his foot, a lot of pain and it is swollen.

 


 

 

Saturday, July 25, 1987 BILLIE TO HOSPITAL

 

Very hot and humid. I got up early, got the regular work done. Made two cakes, washed floors etc. Billie don’t feel good, so much pain in the toe. He done his chores today than came in and went to bed. I went up to camp in PM. It was hot, but cooler up there. Billie went to the hospital tonight because of his bad foot. He was very sick. Dorothea, Kim and Zack got him ready to go down. Betty was there a little while after.

 

 

 

Sunday, July 26, 1987 cleared off to become a nice day

 

A thunder shower early this morning. Quite heavy. Kim came up for breakfast. Zack stopped in to eat a bite too. I got the work done up early. Kim had to work today. Zack came up to mow the lawns. Bill was so hateful. He told Zack you would do it. He was downright mean. David came down this morning to see if he could do anything. Zack mowed his own lawns. Billie is just the same, still in a lot of pain. Brogan stands up. Bill mowed the millet for the cows.

 

 

 

Monday, July 27, 1987

 

A very nice sunny day, good summer temps. I did washing and ironing. Carmen came, cleaned and to town. Bill and Kim down to see Billie. Also Dorothea. Dorothea came and got some vegetables, string beans and some greens. Billie is a dite more relaxed today, his toe will come off tomorrow or next day. Betty H called, she and Betty S went to Oxford. Brogan over to Lewiston with her father. I worked on a box of pictures for Betty H.
