The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 11 - 13, 1979 Getting Ready For Winter

Thursday, October 11, 1979 Brockle head, Walt’s heifer

Well, a dite of rain and clouds but it cleared. Betty, Delores and I went to town. Then Fern, Betty, Joy and I went to Lewiston to take Zak over for a checkup. He is okay and doing fine. Joy and Betty stopped at a few antique shops for glass feet for Joy’s stove. She found them. It has been so bad weather all week, snow went today. Today Billie bought of Butch a brockle head calf. Also Walt’s heifer went to be dressed.

Friday, October 12, 1979

What a day, heavy rain all day and it is raining hard tonight at 10 PM. Today done up the regular work, got ready and went up to Dorothea’s and sat the stove back after they got the chimney built. It looks so nice as Betty and Joy got it cleaned. Then went to Joy’s, Bill, Billie and Joy, brought her stove over from the camp and set it up in her new room. That too looks so very nice. Then back down to Betty’s and we done her chickens or hens. Billie killed and pulled the feathers off, we cleaned them. Then Billie cleaned her hen house and they got the pullets in. Then up to Joy’s and did the same. Betty and Joy were so pleased to get those jobs done. Bill worked at David’s. He gets tired.

Saturday, October 13, 1979 Billie got new steer

Cloudy, foggy and drizzly half forenoon. Then cleared. It was cold and windy. Dorothea and David came about 8:30. They went up to their house and what a HAPPY for Dorothea and David when they found a very pretty clean stove and a nice warm kitchen and 2 old ladies sitting in front of the stove with feet on the hearth drinking coffee. It pleased her so much as she had planned to do that awful job today. Today Billie bought a new steer from Sawin Millett. I went up to Dorothea’s. She and Betty had cleaned the refrigerator which they were so pleased with. It looks nice. Bill helping David all day. Esther, Susan and kids called at Dorothea’s.
