The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 26 - 29, 1979

 

Wednesday, December 26, 1979

 

It was cloudy most of the day, but it finally cleared. I did a big wash, wrote two thank you notes. Verna and Barnaby. I watched the programs. Down to Betty’s and she was up here a minute. Billie at Fern’s and around. Bill up to David’s. Carmen, Kim and Zak enjoyed their new gifts.

 

 

 

Thursday, December 27, 1979

 

Partly cloudy. Partly sunny. I done up regular work, down town with Betty and kids. Came home, read the papers, watch the TV shows. Billie away off and on all day. Bill up to David’s a little while.

 

 

 

Friday, December 28, 1979

 

A real nice sunny day. I was busy all day. In a.m. I done regular work, defrosted refrigerator. Cleaned the one on the porch. Also I washed house windows and porch windows. Bill up to David’s. Billie down town, got haircut. In PM down to the eye doctors with Joy. Zak stayed up tonight. No Zak didn’t day tonight. He and Walt went to Walt’s sister in Rhode Island for the night. So Carmen came up and stayed all night.

 

 

 

Saturday, December 29, 1979 No Snow

 

Dorothea and David up today. Bill went up with them to their house. Betty and I called in PM. I done my regular work, baked some beans. Walt and Zak staying at Grimes’ tonight. Tonight Dorothea, Dave, Betty, Carmen, Kim, Billie, Dawn and I had a birthday for Bill. He got nice gifts, money. Had ice cream and one of Dorothea’s famous ice cream chocolate rolls. Very good.
