The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 17 - 20, 1979 Posing for Christmas Cards AGAIN

Saturday, November 17, 1979

A little on the cool side. I done up my regular work. Did a dite of cooking, washed floors etc. Dorothea came up alone today. David had to work. I went up for a little while, but I was so cold I didn’t stay very long. Bill up to Dorothea’s all day. Carmen called. She seemed a little better. Betty up to the shelter. Kimmy down to school selling tickets.

A quite nice sunny day. I done up my work and went up to Dorothea’s. I helped her a dite. She got the pantry clean. Some started in the kitchen. Bill up there working, he and David worked on the cellar pump and putting the glass in the windows. Came home about 3:30. Got supper.

Monday, November 19, 1979 Carmen to doctor, Dr. Cohen in Harrison

Well it was nice and clear when we got up and then it clouded. But cleared a little later. I did a big wash and washed kitchen curtains. I made out my store list and menu, also my schedule for the week.

Well, kind of cloudy and rain at times. I went to town to do with the rest of the Thanksgiving shopping. Came home, made dark bread, cake and salad. Bill up to Dave’s all day.
