The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 28 - 31, 1979 HALLOWEEN

Sunday, October 28, 1979 Es and Cliff gone

 

It was cloudy and it began to snow then turned to rain. Esther and Cliff left about 8:30 for their trip to Florida. They are going to Milan’s to stay tonight. Dorothea and Dave up to their place. Dorothea came down to get ready to go to Phonie and Sis’s 25th wedding anniversary. Billie cleaned up leaves in the ditches. Bill up to Dave’s a little while. I done regular work. Zak watched TV then went home about 11 AM to help get the apples picked. I just done regular work.

 

 

 

Monday, October 29, 1979

 

A quite nice day, after cleared off. I did a very big wash. Then went down and helped at Betty’s to get the applesauce made. Bill and Billie sawed and hauled wood. Other things too.

 

 

 

Tuesday, October 30, 1979

 

Well, a kind of partly cloudy day. I have been busy all day. I defrosted and turned off refrigerator on porch. I did the ironing, other odds and end jobs, made 2 poor pies. Bill and Billie finished cutting and hauling the wood up. Bill up to David’s. Billie took care of the tools and got them into the shed, oiled them etc. I took a walk down into the woods. Carmen came up before supper. Billie up to Dave’s to help Bill do something.

 

 

 

Wednesday, October 31, 1979

 

A beautiful day. It was sunny all day and not too cold. I done up my regular work. I then went up to Joy’s, Betty was there. We helped Joy. Betty and Joy moved furniture into her new room. I did a few dishes for her and scoured a teakettle for her. We took a walk out to all the outbuildings. Joy has them all cleaned up and they look so nice, it is a beautiful place up there. Joy is lucky she has it all. This is Halloween night. We had about 25 people call. This was the first year Carmen and Kim didn’t go out. Bill up to David’s and mowed Fern’s  leaves. Billie getting his fall work all done.
