The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Carmen up to shelter. Billie in and out. Betty, Walt, Carmen having a New Year’s Eve party. Joy, Buddy, Billie, Susan, Kathy, Zenya and Laurie.

Memo for This Year

Lloyd died on January 14 of the year. He had been very bad for about a month. He had been at Andrews Nursing Home from (blank) to January 14, 1979.

We had a very cold winter and bad storms. Betty had a back problem first of the year. Quite a lot of heavy wind too. Bill helped Bill to work on his frozen pipes. Bill and Ilan done a lot of ice fishing this winter. Billie down to the Dresden fishing. Carmen and Dawn went with him on one trip.

All the family had a Turkey dinner at Dawn’s early this year. Very nice. We had quite a bit of rain in March. It helped to take the snow.

Carmen has AFS student this year. Or, belonged on to the AFS program. She had a chance to go to New York. She had a AFS at her house, her name Jenny Boule. A very nice girl. Very rich girl. She was from Foxboro High School near New York City. The group had parties, trips etc. It was so much fun for Carmen. Then when she went to New York it was a whole new life for her. She saw so much and learned a lot. The place where she lived was a very rich family. A regular mansion. Think of Carmen and a place like that. She had such a good time with all the kids she went with. Danny Hayes, Zenya, Carroll Paine, Leslie Swanson, Doreen McHatton, Larry Tedford, the Levine twins, Larry MacLellan and many more.

We had a drought early in the spring and summer. Everyone got the hay done. Gardens were good this summer. Had a good summer. Fern got her business (personal) all straightened up this year. Billie bought and exchanged cows, heifers and steers the summer. One cow we was quite attached to went.

The old Ripley Fletcher and lately called Town Garage was torn down this past summer. A nice parking lot was made out of the land.

Stephen Lyons

Buddy’s brother was shot in early summer. He and Joy were called down there and was there for a long time. Joy came home. Weeks after Buddy and his mother came by car. She lived with them for a while them bought a trailer home for herself. Joy made a lot of improvements at her home. She built a nice new room, a two-car garage.

Pa in the hospital this summer. He is in bad condition. Zak took a course in basketball the summer. At Lake Region High School, he liked it.

Norma gay and family here this summer. We enjoyed the visit very much. They have 2 cute and smart kids. Carlton’s family here the summer.

Carmen worked at the shelter this summer. Betty and Walt lost the calf this summer, they had bought to raise for beef. This was the first summer Lawrence hasn’t done the haying for a long time. Walt in the hospital for gallstone attack.

In August 18 of this past year Dorothea and David made a down payment on the Chet Edson farm on the Ridge. They made a lot of changes inside and out in a very short time. They will make some changes and more improvements as they move in.

They made many improvements at New Hope Farm this past year.

Carmen had a grand time at the LRH S homecoming. Her class won the first prize in the float. A very heavy rainy day. Frances Brackett in the hospital this past summer.

Walt bought a large amount of wood this fall to sell. We bought a brand-new stove for down cellar burning wood as many people are because of the fuel shortage and high price last of the year. Iran is holding many people, Americans, hostages.

This year Kimberly Allie Horton made the honor roll at school. Carmen is doing well at school but has a very hard course. Zak is doing much better in the 4th grade.

Jeff has got a very good job this past year and is doing very well, also bought a nice new car. He and Paula had Christmas with us. Our family altogether this year. Had a nice Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Billie finished working at M and M casting in September of this past year
