The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 19 - 22, 1979

 

Wednesday, December 19, 1979 Cold

 

I  went down to Betty’s a little while. Kim not feeling very good. She is home. Betty made fudge and pumpkin bread. I made cornballs.

 

 

 

Thursday, December 20, 1979 Last day of school of this first term.

 

A very cold day. I went to town in forenoon. I done a lot of odds and end jobs. Betty to Norway with Joy. I been busy getting ready for Christmas this PM. Kim to school, don’t feel very good.

 

 

 

Friday, December 21, 1979 Kim sick

 

A nice day. I did a wash. I made pies for supper, creampuffs made, 2 batches of fudge made, bread and rolls too for Christmas dinner. Bill and Billie out and in. It has been on the cool side but it did warm up some. Carmen up for supper. We, Betty, Zak, Carmen, Bill and I went up to Dorothea’s and set up the Christmas tree. Called at Joy’s in a.m. She and Cindy over here in PM.

 

 

 

Saturday, December 22, 1979 Mild, Kim still sick

 

It has been cloudy. I have been very busy all day. Washed all the windows inside, dusted, cleaned cupboards, doors and kitchen. Bill up to Dorothea’s, also Betty and Walt. Billie gone with Wes after cattle. Carmen up a little while. Billie D called and got milk.
