The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 13 - 16, 1979

Tuesday, November 13, 1979 Carmen didn’t go to school

I did a wash and they dried very good. It was cloudy but a northwest breeze. Betty and Joy to Portland. Carmen home sick. Bill down to the camp all day.

Wednesday, November 14, 1979 KIMBERLY ALLIE BOUTILIER HORTON MADE THE HONOR ROLL AT SCHOOL A’s and B’s

Another cloudy rainy day. I got my work done up and went down to town. I was there while she took Carmen to the doctor. She has a sleeping sickness. Betty and Joy to Norway in PM. Tonight when Kim came home from school she was a very happy and proud girl. She has made the honor roll. Billie in and out all day. Bill was too, here there and everywhere.

Thursday, November 15, 1979

It was clear when we got up this morning, first time for about 10 days. I washed early. I done up all my regular work. Got ready to go to town at 9:45. Came home, did my hair, got my clothes in and did the ironing. Over to Mechanic Falls with Betty. She bought a nice safe and the bureau for Zak’s Christmas.

Friday, November 16, 1979 Carmen and Kim off to school, I just waived them goodbye

Got the letter off to the Butterfly Group. Snow on the ground this morning, just a light scattered covering. Well I got my work done, went down, got my hair set. Came home, down to Betty’s and helped her do some Christmas wrapping. Carmen went to the hospital about 12:30 tonight for asthma relief. She could breathe much better after she got home.
