The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 22 - 24, 1979

Monday, October 22, 1979 HOT HOT, STEER WENT

Well another very hot day. I did a very big wash. Clothes dried very good, down to Betty’s a little while. She took Carmen, Kim and Zak to doctors in PM. Kim and Zak for orthodontist appointments, Carmen to Dr. Briggs for her asthma. Carmen and Kim are both having very severe problems with asthma. Carmen has missed school. I’m very worried about them. Betty got me a whole lot of Halloween candies. Billie’s big steer went today. Noon to be butchered. He went to Norway, got medicine for Heidi and a couple new mops for me. Bill up to Dave’s and did a little work. He came home about noon, it was so hot.

Tuesday, October 23, 1979 foggy when we got up, HOT

At about 11 o’clock the fog got burned off. Then sun came out hot again. I done work, washed floor, did a big ironing. I prepared my supper. Watched most of the shows. Kim up for supper. Betty worked at the shelter all day. Billie helped Dawn get her wood in today. Bill worked at David’s. Dorothea got the news today that the FHA had approved of Jeff’s loan to buy the house.

Well it has been a cloudy rainy day. Got my work done up early and we went up to Dorothea’s. Joy, Betty and I, we cleaned all of her back bedrooms upstairs. After I got home it cleared off nice and sunny. Bill up to Dorothea’s too.
