The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

It has been cloudy today. I have been busy all day getting ready for tonight and tomorrow. I made pies, cleaned up the whole house and in PM Fern came up. We had a early supper, oyster stew. Dorothea and Dave came and we all went up to the farm. Bill had just got the job done up there. Dorothea was so pleased and excited about all that he had done. She was so pleased also was pleased to see the Christmas tree and gifts too. At about 7:30 they began to come. We had such a nice Christmas. Many useful gifts. Just our own families, Fern and Dawn. It was very nice.

Tuesday, December 25, 1979 RAIN

It has been such a heavy rainy day. Not at all a Christmas looking day. We got up and down to Betty’s about 8. Betty and the kids had their turkey in and it smelled so good. They had a lot of nice and useful gifts. We had a very nice dinner. Turkey, roast pork and all the goodies right down through. This year we had all our family. Bill and Billie, Dorothea and family and Betty and family, Fern and Dawn there too. In PM Joy and girls, Susan and family, Billie D all called. It was extra special having Jeff with us this year. Hope he will be all the time. Also enjoyed Paula. Kim got a new stereo. Billie and I took the tree out, cleaned up all the things.
