The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 3 - 6, 1977

Tuesday, May 3, 1977 very cold and windy $92.80 Billie’s bedroom, $213

It has been sunny but very windy and cold. Today Dawn and Betty came up and cleaned and painted Billie’s bedroom, it looks so nice. A blue. It has been green ever since we moved in. They did a good job and it looks very nice with the new curtains too. We went to see Chet tonight, he is about the same. He is under medication for the awful pain. It is a very pitiful situation, no family, no home and one leg gone.

A nice day, not cold or windy. I got my work done up early and went down to Betty’s. We went to North Conway to shop. I got new kitchen curtains. Fern went with us, she enjoyed it all very much. Billie took Chet’s papers, deeds etc. to Dudley. Billie put birdbath out and dial ball.

Thursday, May 5, 1977 Beautiful Day, Hot

I went down to Betty’s and worked while she and Dawn cleaned shed chamber and barn. Also other things. I did the wash, dusted, swept, washed floor etc. Bill made a chicken fence for Betty and put up an extension of the corral around the hen house.

I went down town and done some shopping. It was cloudy and rain. I came home and ironed and did other things. Down to Fern’s and helped  Es and Fern clean Fern’s closets and cellar. Tonight we went to see Chet, he is very poorly.
