The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 25 - 28, 1977 Hawaiian Dinner

Saturday, June 25, 1977 miserable day again

Partly cloudy all day. Billie went to Norway at Twitchell’s. Bill worked on the tractor. David came and he helped. They moved the deep freezer at Betty’s. Dorothea spent the day at Joy’s. Here for supper. She said Jeff called, he is so unhappy about Paula. Zak up here tonight. They have company. A friend of Walt’s.

Sunday, June 26, 1977

Cloudy dreary all day. Not only a speck of sun for the day. I changed beds, did the regular work. Kids here off and on. Tonight Carmen, Laurie and Zenya had a Hawaine (Hawaiian) supper for Betty, Walt and friends.

Monday, June 27, 1977

A quite nice day. I did a big wash. Went down to Betty’s. Bill and Betty harrowed Betty and Dawn’s garden. I cleaned up the house after the miserable rainy weekend. It seems so good to see such a nice day.

Tuesday, June 28, 1977 beautiful day, hot

This is been a beautiful day, on the hot side. Kim here all day. I got ready, Bill and I took Dorothea’s car down and brought Bill’s back. Kim stayed here to get rested. She is so tired. When we got back I defrosted my refrigerator. Esther called to see if I wanted to go to see Lloyd with them. So I did. I got dinner, dishes washed, cleaned up the kitchen, got the roast started. Went to Norway with them. Kim went too. Came home, got a big supper. Did a big ironing and 1 million other things. Kim stayed up again tonight too.
