The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 3 - 6, 1977

Friday, June 3, 1977 $213 Bills RAIN CLEARED IN P.M., $92.80 me

 

Done regular work. Went down to Betty’s to see the cleaned barn. I done some more figuring. Bill and I to town, cashed checks, got groceries. It rained all forenoon and cleared in PM. Verna, Brud and Kathy are here. Bill got haircut. Zak is up here staying tonight. He may go to summer school this summer.

 


 

 

 

 

Saturday, June 4, 1977 CARMEN

 

Cloudy and rain showers off and on. This morning Carmen up early and got ready and left to go to the LRH school to take the bus with the rest of her class to go to Boston Massachusetts. They had such a good time. All enjoyed it very much. Betty, Kim, Fern and I went down to school to pick her up. Betty and I took Fern to Andrews Nursing Home. Then we went to garage sales. Lloyd not very good today. Bill went to one barn sale with us. Billie up to Washington with Lawrence.

 

 

 

Sunday, June 5, 1977

 

Another cloudy showery day, more rain than sunshine. Betty and Walt to garage sale. Dorothea and Dave came up, Dorothea and I went to a barn sale. Also Zak and Kim. Billie over to see Lloyd. Also Fern went to see him. He is not so good today. Jeff leaves this week for Michigan.

 

 

 

Monday, June 6, 1977 PERMANENT, CALF BORN

 

I got up early, got my work done. Got ready and went to North Conway with Betty and Dawn. We done grocery shopping. We all got a few things at Ames. Got home at 1:30, went to June’s and got my permanent.
