The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 1 - 4, 1977

Friday, April 1, 1977 CARMEN, $213, $92.80

Windy but clear and cool. Today Carmen was in the spelling contest at school. She was up until 10. She got a merit badge and done very well. I’m proud of her. I washed, washed windows and cooked after going to town early this morning. Bill worked at camp.

A cloudy day. I got my work done up early, got ready and went to Portland with Carmen, Betty and Kim to do Kim’s birthday shopping. Clothes are expensive and not too much to choose from. We had lunch at Deering’s. Stopped at Zayre’s and Bradlee’s too. It is raining here tonight. Too cold for snow to go much today.

Sunday, April 3, 1977 WINDY WINDY

A very heavy wind. I did a washing, got the clothes in and done my ironing and mended a couple things. I was busy most of the day. Billie up to Chet’s, to see Lloyd. He is very good. Snow went a lot.

Monday, April 4, 1977

A nice sunny day, some wind but very cold. I washed my kitchen ceiling and did some washing. I went down to Fern’s in p.m. Betty had a meeting at her house. In the evening she and I called at Fern’s a minute. Then Betty went to help someone fix a cat and got badly bitten and scratched.
