The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 15 -18, 1977 Chet Died

Sunday, May 15, 1977 CHET DIED

Quite a nice sunny day, a dite warmer. I done my work. We went to see about outside plants. I did a big ironing. Read rest of my papers. Betty, Walt, Carmen and Zak up to North Waterford and to North Conway. Bill and Billie relaxed. Tonight about 8 PM Ruth Swett called. Chet had died. He is with Lil now out of his awful suffering. We will miss him. Billie has been like a son to Chet and Lil.

Monday, May 16, 1977 GOOD NEWS

Cloudy in a.m., cleared in p.m. I cleaned my living room. Had a lot of phone calls about Chet etc. Billie went down to see Les Dudley, the attorney. He was Chet’s lawyer. He gave him some very good news in regards to the estate of Chet’s and the will. He is to get the most out of it after all bills are paid. Bill painted at Betty’s all day.

Tuesday, May 17, 1977 80 to 90°

HOT HOT HOT. It has been a very hot day. Everything growing good. I went down and helped Betty most of the day. We settled her dark bedroom. Then I came home, done some cleaning in my kitchen. Also after supper Esther and Cliff came over and we went down to Betty’s and got some dandelions. We got our screens up, washed and all on the windows. Esther helped. Betty, Walt and kids came and called. Also Pat and Irvin dropped in a little while.

Wednesday, May 18, 1977 CHET’S FUNERAL, Hair Set

A quite nice day. It wasn’t very warm. I washed, done up my work, went over to June’s and got my hair set. Came home, washed kitchen floor, dusted and got ready to go to Chet’s funeral. Billie home at noon. He, Betty and I went. He is all over his suffering and I hope with Lil. He looked much younger than he has for a long while. A nice lot of flowers and they were very pretty.
